Currently Trending: Love It or Leave It?

Anyone else a sucker for a good trend?? Heck, I'll admit it, sometimes I'm a sucker for a really bad trend. In fact, probably more times than I'd care to admit, have I hopped on board the bad trend express.

There are quite a few trends currently making their way through the world of fashion, from the runways of Fashion Week all the way to chain retail clothing stores like Forever 21 and Zara.

I pulled a few that I've been seeing a lot lately and broke them down into trends that I'm digging and trends that kind of make me cringe. Obviously, style and taste is a very personal thing, so my opinion may be completely different from yours...but this is my blog, so deal with it. Just kidding. But, no really.

Fishnet leggings and socks
My gut reaction to this one was, "There's no way that can look tasteful," but the minute I actually saw a pair of fishnet socks poking out under jeans, I realized I actually kind of loved it. As with most trends, I have a very strong and specific preference for how I like these styled. I think this trend works best under cropped denim with a pair of loafers or oxfords. I typically think of fishnets as more of a grunge piece, so I love the juxtaposition of edge and prep when paired with a more tailored shoe. Overall, I love this trend.

Slip dresses over t-shirts
Again, I thought, "What are people doing wearing their undergarments on the outside??" but now that I've seen more and more fashion bloggers wearing them, I've warmed up to the idea. It's definitely a statement, though not one I'm likely to make, but mad props to the ladies who rock this look. Overall, this trend is not for me.

Chokers
Boy, do these take me back to high school. My ninth grade yearbook picture is definitely me wearing a vintage tee (remember those? they weren't actually vintage, but had weird ads or sayings on them that made them seem "vintage.") with an ad for a Chinese food restaurant and a black choker. I was also rocking some killer braces. I have to say I'm a fan of this trend. There are just certain necklines that call for a choker. I also like the look of a choker layered with other necklaces, like in the image above. Overall, I love this trend.

Embroidered details
This one's a no-brainer for me. Adorable embroidered flowers on my jeans? Yes, please! Embroidered details are a great way to make a statement with an otherwise simple piece. I like them best on denim, but have also really been digging the look on button-up shirts. Overall, have to say, I love this trend.

Velvet
One of my rules of dressing is that an outfit must be comfortable. Velvet, to me, is not a breathable fabric and therefore, not the most comfortable of options. I definitely like the way it looks on some people and I think in small doses, i.e. a velvet clutch or velvet loafers, it can look very nice, but overall, this trend is just not my cup of tea.

Platform brogues
It seems like lately, the taller the platform, the better. I personally really like this trend, but prefer a more subtle platform. Basically, if I look like one of the Spice Girls, it's too tall. That may also be because I'm 5'10 and really don't need any additional height. But a mild platform brogue? Love it!

Mom jeans
You don't have to be a mom to love mom jeans! I happen to think the high-waisted, ever-so-slightly baggieness of these are ultra flattering. I like tucking in my shirts to emphasize my waistline and these jeans were made for that. I can especially imagine this trend with more of a boxy semi-cropped shirt. Overall, definitely love the mom jeans look.

Overall...
In essence, the 90s are back and here to stay. At least for now. I guess that's the beauty of trends. They change as quickly as the seasons, so if you really hate it, it probably won't be around for long and if you really love it, hang onto it because it will probably come back around shortly.

Really though, wear what you love and what makes you happy because that's really what personal style is all about. Look good in skinny jeans? You rock those skinny jeans! Fan of flares? Work those flares! Just do you and don't worry about the rest.
